I hate the tech. It ruins the engagement and fun of learning. It’s supposed to be hands on, creative, and work with others. Tech limits that and limits the connection your brain gets from pencil on paper. Tech can be helpful, but with purpose and skill

My daughter’s retention went down when everything was completed on the Chromebook. E-books instead of physical books. No pen and paper work.

As the mom of two older teens, I have a lot of anger about how much tech has been used in education over the last 10 years. At least cell phone bans are starting to roll out now.

Her description of how kids use Google Classroom is funny…schools need a whole subscription service (ours is go guardian) to control kids laptops because they by and large will do *anything* to avoid work, including finding workarounds for go guardian. They will message each other using a shared doc, watch YouTube, play games, and when we cut access or close a tab they will play that dinosaur thing that pops up when Google doesn’t work 😆 Honestly their creativity in avoiding work is kind of endearing!

The correlations between handwriting and memory are *very* direct. Physical school supplies are so important. This year, every lesson of mine is on paper or spoken aloud, and the digital class portal is just for those who were absent and need to find what they missed.

Interesting how things have swung back to the intentional use of computers for kids in school versus just all day use…. Kind of like the purpose of those computer labs in the first place.

So I have embraced Chromebooks and Google Classroom before COVID. The key is you don't modify activities to fit a digital platform you start from scratch, I could go into depth about the paradigm mind shift but this is just a comment section. 🤣

Finally. Ridiculous how long this took. Being back textbooks and paper! Make standardized tests paper based too and you will see scores improve also. People discount the lack of physicality with tech. It helps when studying or taking a test.

There are few paper textbooks in most schools today. Most standardized tests are delivered electronically. There is a much larger environment requiring access to computers in day to day instruction beyond just teachers. Outside of education, almost everything practicality requires a device and internet access from job applications to filing taxes. Curriculum management systems such as Google Classroom, Blackboard, and Schoology are tools for managing digital instruction, from assignments to trainings for things like library use. For online testing, lockdown browsers prevent internet use. This isn’t COVID school leftovers, these are the systems used in post-secondary. No, we don’t have little business people working on laptops at the discretion and whim of districts, schools and teachers. We have students using devices to navigate through the systems built for them by educational policy and leaders, as well as the state of our society.
