Interesting fact, they recently tried to recreate the Kuleshov Effect with people from Northern Turkey with no media exposure and it had no impact on interpretation. Also, I think you’d really enjoy the research of Reeves and Nass on how our brains treat media as though it’s real life.

Doesn’t the Kuleshov effect depend somewhat on the viewer perceiving shots as part of a continuous narrative? When scenes are intentionally stitched together, we assume they belong together and automatically construct meaning between them. Scrolling between videos feels different. A user action separates each clip, and we know we’re moving between different sources and narratives. If someone mindfully juxtaposes two videos, they’re bound to find connections and meaning that aren’t inherent in either work alone, but I’m less convinced that this happens as strongly or passively when scrolling, though. The Kuleshov effect relies on the filmmaker controlling the sequence and establishing narrative continuity.
