Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov was born on 8 September 1955 in Kazan, then part of the Soviet Union. He is a career Russian military officer who rose through the Soviet and later Russian armed forces. He has served as Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces since November 2012, making him Russia’s longest-serving chief of the General Staff in the post-Soviet period. He also holds the rank of General of the Army. The Chief of the General Staff is essentially Russia’s highest-ranking professional military officer. The position is extremely important because the General Staff is responsible for military planning, force organization, operational coordination, and strategic planning. Early military career Gerasimov entered military education in the 1970s. He graduated from: * Kazan Higher Tank Command School * Malinovsky Military Academy of Armored Forces * Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia He subsequently held numerous command and staff positions, eventually commanding the 58th Combined Arms Army. He also served in the North Caucasus and commanded several Russian military districts. His experience in the Second Chechen War was particularly important for his career. He became known as an experienced operational commander before reaching the highest levels of the Russian military hierarchy. Becoming Russia’s top general On 9 November 2012, Vladimir Putin appointed Gerasimov Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Minister of Defence. He replaced General Nikolai Makarov. He remained in the position through major events including: * Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 * the war in Donbas * Russia’s military intervention in Syria * the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 * subsequent Russian military operations in Ukraine In January 2023, Gerasimov was appointed commander of Russia’s Joint Group of Forces in Ukraine, putting him directly at the center of Russia’s military campaign. The “Gerasimov Doctrine” One of the most famous things associated with him is something commonly called the “Gerasimov Doctrine.” Western analysts began using this term to describe an alleged Russian approach to modern conflict involving combinations of: * conventional military force * information operations * political influence * cyber operations * economic pressure * propaganda * covert or irregular activities However, there is an important complication: Gerasimov himself did not formally publish a document called the “Gerasimov Doctrine.” The term largely comes from Western interpretations of a 2013 speech/article in which he discussed changing forms of warfare. So it is more accurate to say that “Gerasimov Doctrine” is a Western analytical label, rather than an official Russian military doctrine personally written by Gerasimov. Role in the war in Ukraine Gerasimov became one of the central Russian military commanders during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The initial Russian campaign suffered major problems, including failures to capture Kyiv and significant Russian losses. Gerasimov and then-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu subsequently became targets of criticism from Russian military bloggers and the Wagner leadership. The situation became particularly dramatic during the Wagner rebellion in June 2023. Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin publicly attacked both Shoigu and Gerasimov, accusing them of incompetence and demanding their removal. The rebellion eventually collapsed without overthrowing Russia’s military leadership. Despite this criticism, Gerasimov remained in his position. His relationship with Putin Gerasimov is considered a key member of Russia’s military leadership and has remained in his post through several major military and political crises. His importance is not simply that he is “a general.” As Chief of the General Staff, he sits at the intersection of military planning, strategic decision-making and the political leadership’s direction of #россия #украина #киев #герасимов #ракеты
