For years other people ruled in my name, but when I finally took control at eighteen, I quickly proved I had ideas of my own. I refused to become the obedient wife my advisers expected. I pushed through the peace that ended the Thirty Years’ War, filled my court with artists, philosophers and scholars, and ignored the whispers about how a Queen was supposed to behave. There was one problem. Sweden was fiercely Protestant, while I had secretly become fascinated by Catholicism. Priests were brought into my palace in secret to teach me their faith. Eventually I made an extraordinary decision. I gave away my crown, left Sweden and converted. Rome celebrated me as one of Catholicism’s great prizes, but apparently one crown had not been enough. In France I plotted with Cardinal Mazarin to seize Naples from Spain and make myself Queen. When the plan was betrayed by a man in my own household, I had him killed. I eventually settled in Rome, surrounding myself once again with musicians, artists and thinkers. Yet even as a famous Catholic convert, I condemned France when it began persecuting Protestants. I made mistakes. Plenty of them. But the crown had been placed on my head when I was still a child, and eventually I gave it all away for the freedom to live as I chose.
