“Should I pull my shoulders back before I press?” “Should I retract before the press?” These aren’t “bad” cues but IMO they are not ideal for a lot of reasons. 1. It doesn’t set up the natural mechanics at the shoulder that you need to really nail the press for the pecs 2. No one presses something in real life away like that. But at the same time, we’re trying to use the press to load the pecs 3. Most people who try to set the shoulders in retraction end up either compensating in the press by too much protraction (this is more common on flies when someone starts getting close to task failure) or that they try to get that “BiG DeEP StrETCH” which then causes them to run out of room on the back end (the traps are already fully short) and then the scapula has to tip over the top of the ribcage and then the head of the humerus is forced into the anterior capsule of the GH joint This is bad because it puts the biceps tendon in a shitty position and is def going to cause you to have some shoulder pain over time 4. It’s better to think about LIFT THE STERNUM 5. This will naturally set your shoulders and gets the pecs “out in front” of the delts for the press 6. You will also naturally get the amount of retraction and protraction that is ideal for your press So think about getting the sternum UP rather than “pulling the shoulders back”
