Euridice was never leaving the Underworld. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is an allegory for grief, with the Underworld representing mourning itself. Orpheus descends because he cannot accept that Eurydice is gone, and Hades, knowing that the dead cannot truly return to the living, offers him a condition that is both merciful and honest: he may lead her out, but he must not look back. The test is not really about obedience so much as acceptance. If Orpheus never looked back, never allowed himself to confront the reality of her absence, then even if he physically left the Underworld, some part of him would have remained there forever, trapped in grief and in the hope that what was lost could still be restored. By looking back, he finally sees and acknowledges the truth of Eurydice’s death, she is gone. Hades’ bargain is therefore not a cruel trick, but a path out of grief: Orpheus can only truly leave the Underworld once he accepts that Eurydice cannot leave it with him.

I use to think that until I saw his pov in Sandman season 2 and the silence was unbearable. Like I knew she was behind him because of the myth, but at his place... It's torture to not know.

I get that the whole point of the story is that he left self doubt and fear win but he was LITERALLY at the door, he couldn’t last like 4 or five more steps???? If he had turned around after they were both out it literally would have been fine.

a big part of the story is that people may not visit the underworld more than once until they die, so he was worried that Hades was tricking him because his wife couldn't talk and he didn't know it was her for sure, and he couldn't go back again to get her.
