Here’s a great tip for you guys! Pulled this out of our BRAND NEW YouTube episode that just went live. One of the biggest misconceptions in deer hunting is that the rut is the BEST time to kill giant bucks. For any mature 5-7 year old deer sure it can be effective, but targeting a specific deer, I actually prefer the pre-rut window from roughly October 10th through November 3rd, with October 20th through the first few days of November being absolute money. Why? Because before breeding really kicks off, those old bucks are still highly predictable. They’re focused on communication, establishing dominance, checking inventory, and monitoring does. Their primary communication tool is the scrape, and they’ll often visit the same scrape systems repeatedly. They’re also hitting water consistently and following much more repeatable patterns. Once the rut fully explodes, predictability goes out the window. Now you’re dealing with a buck that may spend 24-48 hours locked down with a single doe. Then he’ll leave and find another. Then another. Instead of hunting a pattern, you’re hunting chance encounters and hoping that giant passes through your area while transitioning between does. Don’t get me wrong, big bucks die every year during the rut. But if your goal is to target a specific mature deer, I’d much rather hunt him before breeding peaks while he’s still communicating through scrapes and following a more consistent routine. If you put your focus here, you’ll put yourself in front of more giants than the guy simply sitting all day hoping one cruises by.
