When they root up the ground they aren’t eating whats on the surface layer. Imagine a cake. They don’t want the icing they want the white stuff inside. Icing has worms and poop and icky stuff. Yes the cake can also have worms but much less than the icing

A pig can digest everything other than fingernails and hair. Mine had ate things that I’m not sure anything else would live. But lord help us if he eats bread. Then he starts to throw up and that is the worst smell you can think of.

It is wasteful more than anything. They don't eat the scattered feed, just continue to spread it around. They "root around" for actual roots. When using commercial feed, putting it in a trough is more economical.
