@alanonai: Somebody asks what you've been working on, and you say "the app." And that's true, and it's also nothing. You just spent three weeks on something and you can't describe it to a person standing in front of you. That's not you being bad at talking about your work. It's that you've been doing about six jobs that don't have names yet. You decide what it's worth and who it's for. You decide what it does. You build it. You check it. You keep it running. You answer when somebody's stuck. In any company those are six people who argue with each other about priorities. You've got all six and nobody to argue with. And once they have names, something changes that I didn't expect. You can finish a sentence you couldn't finish before. A founder I work with asked me this. He said, I know I need help, what do I ask for? He wasn't being rhetorical. There was actually a chance of getting some, and he could not answer. The only thing he could say was that he needed another one of himself, which nobody can give you. Now he can say: I spend a day a week answering the same eleven questions, here they are, here's what it's costing me. That's something a person can respond to. Look, the alone part is real. Nobody checks your thinking. Nobody notices when you've been at it too long. I'm not going to pretend that goes away. But you haven't been doing one job badly.
