@b_marsch: Instead of splitting my hair into the usual 3 sections, I split it into 4. I take the two outermost sections and swoop them over the top, combining them with the middle sections, and then braid like normal. That little “swoop” pulls the hair in tighter so the sides actually lay flat instead of getting loose and poofy — and my braid stays tighter all day too.
