Atheer Kakan :
If you wanna listen to something really good that was done about this. You should listen to "Inside the Exorcist" podcast. Excellent material and narration.

In 1973 I was a senior in high school. I devoured The Exorcist book in 24 hours - could not put it down. I was mortified by what I read, began imaging scratching on the ceiling, missing items. I told my mother I was becoming possessed. She laughed at me and told me to put that crazy book away! We are Catholic so I told her to get a priest of things got weird. She assured me everything would be fine. When the movie was released, my friends and I stood in line for over an hour and ended up in the front row. It was terrifying. Not because of the horror on screen, but because of what the horror actually represented. It wasn’t a monster - it was the daughter she loved. We saw it 3 times. I took my mother and aunt to see it with my cousin. They were speechless. I have a signed photo from Linda Blair as Regan. I have it hidden - can’t bear to look at it. A singular masterpiece that can never be copied.

The whole opening Northern Iraq sequence is just superbly done. Friedkin at the top of his game. Sets the tone and atmosphere for all that follows. The menace of the Demon is somehow present in the opening as a precursor for what’s to come.

I agree the film was about Father Merrin. In the iconic scene from The Exorcist 1973 right after Father Merrin arrives at the MacNeils house at night, he steps inside and is greeted by Chris MacNeil and Father Karras in the hallway. As they are introducing themselves and exchanging brief words, the sound design suddenly shifts. From the upstairs bedroom the possessed Regan in a terrifying, booming voice screams out “MERRIN!!!” Even before Father Merrin enters that room the demon knows exactly who has arrived to fight it. The spine chilling delivery of Merrin’s name was voiced by actress Mercedes McCambridge who used aggressive vocal techniques to achieve the demon’s guttural, detached sound.

Only way I could explain it, was Merran facing his past again facing evil once again, this movie is about him not her Pazuzu used Reagen to get to Father Merran
