I would strongly urge the council to reconsider the current resident parking arrangements and restore free resident parking, as was previously the case. Residents should not face increasing costs simply to park within the area where they live. There also needs to be a significant improvement in how event-day parking restrictions are communicated. Visiting family and friends can easily receive fines because they are unaware that an event day is in operation. Many visitors are not from London and cannot reasonably be expected to know about local event-day restrictions. A small road sign is simply not sufficient. Event days should be clearly and prominently displayed so that drivers have a fair opportunity to understand the restrictions before parking. The same applies to restricted zones around schools. The signage needs to clearly explain when restrictions apply and, importantly, when they do not. During school holidays, particularly the summer holidays, drivers should be able to clearly see that they are permitted to enter these zones when the school-time restrictions are not in operation. Parking and traffic restrictions should be designed to manage the area effectively, not result in people receiving avoidable fines because the information provided is unclear or easily missed. Clearer signage and communication would make the system much fairer for residents and their visitors.

They build new properties if we all stopped driving they can’t fine us to build. 20 mph speed limit, ulez charge to use the borough to drive through permit car parking charges. They greedy for money they have done everything on charge. They think they doing us a big favour with 2 bulk waste collection when it was free. Wont be long a charge will come into force for walking on the roads whatever you do don’t dare drop litter, enforcement hide and chase you to catch you too. Guess what they give you… another fine that extortionate. The streets are a mess they look no better traffic light & road works everywhere they worry what can be seen they do nothing about high large neighbours trees in small gardens and the mess it makes all year round, plus the damage and even though your a south facing garden. No sun.

I would strongly welcome and encourage the Council to consider holding regular public borough open forum evenings, perhaps once a month or once every three months, subject to a feasibility study. Local residents could be invited to an open forum at the iconic Dockside, where people can raise local concerns, hear updates directly from the Council and, most importantly, feel that they are genuinely part of shaping the borough they live in. I often think back to the sense of community that existed in the past, waking up in the morning and finding fresh pints of milk in glass bottles outside the front door, knowing your neighbours and feeling part of something local. In my view, much of that sense of community has been lost. Newham has an opportunity to reignite some of that traditional community spirit by building a borough that residents feel part of and are proud of, rather than one shaped mainly through spreadsheets, financial budgets, bidding exercises and contracts which too often do not deliver what communities actually need. You will never be able to please everyone. However, if everyone has a genuine opportunity to be heard, there is far more scope for mutual understanding, compromise and better decision making. Every community started somewhere. The first home, the first street, the first neighbourhood, the first school and the first local gathering place. Perhaps we need to return to those roots of unity and community building. Let us make Newham somewhere people genuinely want to live, work and play, not simply because those words appear as a motto on a signboard, but because residents can actually feel it in the place they call home.
