As well, reading those more challenging books can open your interests more widely. E.g. I read Macbeth. Was it hard to understand in places? yes. Did I love every bit of it? yes. Do I now love reading a classic whilst reading a fantasy book? yes. Sometimes the most challenging reads can become a favourite

Reading outside your comfort zone and your familiar experiences builds understanding and empathy. Challenging yourself builds a broader vocabulary. I think it’s especially important with the people who only read romance/dark romance/romantasy with the current state of publishing. Like sure, stay in your genre, but read books from before the 2000s then! See what a properly edited novel with slightly different prose and diction is like so you realise you don’t need to overpay for the underedited hardbacks publishing is pumping out rn 😭 You gotta stop showing publishing you’ll settle for less but if you only know less you think it’s all there is. And apparently this is crazy talk which is wild because I see so many people on here complaining about how bad publishing is, the spelling/grammar mistakes in their books, etc.

Challenging yourself doesn’t even have to be something majorly different, it can be as simple as picking older books in the genres you already know and love. I’ve been doing that lately and it’s been really interesting to see where many to the tropes and genre conventions within fantasy/sci fi have evolved from.

I’m a teacher and am so mentally exhausted during the school year that I like to read light fluffy books or fantasy books to help escape. HOWEVER, I gave myself the challenge to read more non fiction books this year, and I’ve loved the things I’ve learned about from those books

Yes exactlyyyyy. I think unfortunately people are forgetting what the root of the words we use actually mean which leads into conflict within the book community about what is anti intellectual and what is not- and it’s not about the actual book itself it’s more about how we choose to consume and engage with the book

as a spanish speaking person, i started to read in english not long ago after a big pause of reading, and i can say that my vocabulary and understanding of the language improved a lot. sometimes the intellectually challenging read is a romantasy book in another language. i still read psychology texts in spanish because i'm studying that, so i get challenges in both languages
