Our country’s story was never built by just one group of people. The United States was shaped over centuries by Native peoples who were here long before the country existed, by immigrants who arrived from every corner of the world, and by generations of people whose labor, cultures, sacrifices, and dreams became part of the nation we know today.
Long before the United States had its borders, government, or name, Native American nations had already built thriving communities across this land. They developed their own governments, languages, cultures, agricultural systems, trade networks, technologies, and traditions. They cared for and cultivated the land, passed knowledge from generation to generation, and created societies with histories stretching back thousands of years. Any honest story about America has to recognize that Native peoples are not simply a chapter in the distant past—they are living communities and nations that remain an important part of this country today.
Immigrants also played an enormous role in building America. People came here from different countries and backgrounds seeking safety, opportunity, freedom, family, or simply the possibility of a better life. They brought languages, religions, traditions, foods, music, skills, businesses, and ideas that helped shape American culture. Some arrived with very little and worked difficult jobs to build lives for themselves and their children. Others became farmers, factory workers, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, builders, scientists, soldiers, and community leaders. Their contributions became woven into the fabric of American society.
America was also built through the labor of people whose stories have not always received the recognition they deserve. Enslaved Africans and their descendants were forced to contribute their labor to the development of the country while being denied basic freedoms and rights. Generations of Black Americans helped build communities, industries, institutions, and culture while also fighting for the rights and equality promised by the ideals of the nation. Their history is inseparable from American history.
The same can be said of countless generation
