@drbeckyatgoodinside: I saw this video from @katstickler about quiet time after school, and I loved it so much. I'm sure a lot of you will relate too, that pull to jump in with a hundred questions the second your kid gets in the car. If you're wondering why "how was your day?" so often gets a "fine" it's because your kid hasn't switched from school mode to home mode yet. School mode is armor. All day, they're reading the room, managing their face, figuring out where they stand, that takes real effort we don't always credit them for. Home mode is where the armor comes off. And that switch doesn't flip the second they leave the building. It flips when their body decides it's safe enough to let go of the day. So next time you get a "fine," maybe just let it be fine for a minute. The rest tends to show up on its own. 💛

My daughter comes home and tells me… “I need to lie down and relax for a bit before anything else, is that ok?” Girrrlllll I’m all about silence and relaxing

the "shut up mom" and other things was really unfunny from her.Liaten to your kid the first time just like you want them to listen to you when you say it the first time

Also see it as a compliment, they dont have to be “on” with you, this is their safe space to be quiet for a while.

My husband is an extreme extrovert who works from home, in tech, and has maybe one 30 minute meeting a day max. I’m an introvert who talks from 8 am to 5 pm none stop. When I get home we have VERY different needs. 😂

And she literally articulated the request so well too: “Can I have a quiet time?” it’s literally perfect.

After school we have a drink and snacks in the car. Once consumed we can talk. Not before lol

I’m am adult-ish and I can’t deal with my aunts saying hello to me like that. It makes me want to avoid them. 😅

The fake and toxic positivity of the caption saying “I love it so much!” She’s literally doing the opposite of what you’re advising

This kind of reaction is why kids stop saying "Can I have quiet time for a while?" and start saying "I'm fine. Nothing. I dunno. Ugh, can you just leave me alone?"

The question you should be asking your kid is “got any song recommendations for the ride home?”

I've stopped asking my son how his day was, and instead to give school a traffic light rating for that day (reflecting the behaviour system they have). So school was red, amber or green. And then he usually naturally explains his rating. By dinner he's ready to talk more. It works for us.

My 6 year old LOVES to suddenly chat non-stop at bedtime. So I turned that time into meaningful conversation time. I save all my questions about his day for bedtime. We chat for 20min in hos bed and it has been great
