Autism is a prison sentence for the parents and my worst nightmare. So sorry you have to endure it. If you can find an institution for him you shouldn't feel guilty sending him there, you deserve to have a life.

This is exactly why I don’t like it when high functioning people with autism act like autism isn’t something stressful to deal with. They’ll be the first one to tell you that it’s a spectrum, but they always leave out the ones who will never be independent, the ones who are nonverbal, the ones who will most likely never hold a romantic relationship, and the ones who cannot properly advocate for themselves. So when they say “how dare you!“ to people‘s concerns of “what if my child has autism?“ this is what we’re talking about.

an elderly woman a couple towns from me committed a murder suicide on her severely autistic elderly son. the area believes she knew when she passed, no one else could care for him. i believe this has occurred more than just my small area of the world. i’m so sorry…

Then the party of Pro Life cutting programs that help kids like this and no effort to figure out how to best help these families. Cuz according to Republicans they belong in an asylum 🤦

Honestly, I feel like calling everything “autism” under one umbrella can downplay how drastically different the levels of disability can be. There’s a huge difference between someone who is autistic but independent and someone who can’t communicate, live independently, or care for themselves and needs lifelong support.

This is my brother (turning 30 next year). He has severe autism or what they now call level 3. Everyone has different experiences of course, and all are valid. However, life with Connor has gotten easier (in most ways) since growing up. Yes there are new dangers and worries. But he lives at home with my parents, and when they’re too elderly I’ll be his guardian (by choice, and I’m his only sibling). He is happy, cared for, and arguably spoiled. He has his people and has stopped eloping and developed enough verbal skills where we can usually guess simple things he wants/needs. Autism parents: please try to think in the present. Thinking about 20 years from now is not helpful. And please, if you have other kiddos - check on them, it affects them too. Connor has inspired me to be a better person, a better sister, and I’m now a therapist because I just want to help. This is my brother with some firefighters the other day lol. If you have any questions about our autism journey or anything at all please ask, I’m an open book 💛💛💛

I want all those people that glorify Autism saying things like "they have a superpower", "you shouldn't want them to be cured bc this is the way they belong", and more to see the pain this brings.

I worked with autistic kids plus one 19 year old for about a year, and though I really loved some of those kids, I knew then that I could never raise one. I would advise anyone who reads this to do the same.

As an ABA therapist, I completely understand you. I TELL parents it will get harder, they never believe me. Personally, if I had an autistic child of level 3, I could not care for that child. I can do it as my job, I can do it temporarily, but not for my whole life. It would be hell, I’ve seen these parents, they look exhausted and are literally depressed, meanwhile their child is clueless and violent. Honestly I would give my child up for adoption if this was what I dealt with. I don’t want that life.

we need to stop labeling autism as a spectrum. I have aspergers and they slapped us on the "spectrum" and call everything autism. I am not this. He is not me. We are not the same. the more we stretch the term autism the harder awareness and advocacy can be spread without clear definition. This needs its own separate category and funding exclusively poured into research, testing and life long care.

imagine being him.
seriously. hes trapped in a body that doesn't respond to the world as we know it, in a language that hurts, with sounds that created physical pain....
imagine being him for a day.
the current version of him, is literally the best he can do. can you give him the best version of you every time?
