My process for making these Horikoshi-style sketches: I'm terrible at sketching and lineart, but I love coloring. So I start with a rough sketch of the idea and gradually improve it by redrawing it over and over. I need some kind of base, no matter how bad it looks, before I can make it better. The next thing I do is paint the background. For me, it's essential because it helps me figure out where the light and shadows should be. In this case, I chose a simple background color that I knew would contrast nicely with my OC's blonde hair. Since I hate doing lineart, I actually start coloring first, using the shadow color. Once the colors are down, it becomes much easier for me to see what needs improvement. Then I add the lighting to get a better sense of the overall composition. After that, I start detailing the eyes. To me, they're the part that brings the most life to a drawing, so they're my priority. I use Clip Studio Paint's blending brush, then move on to the face, hair, clothes, and the rest of the details. I don't just use darker shades of the base colors—I try to incorporate colors from the environment, or in this case, from the flowers. That's why I added touches of blue (from the sky) to the hair, skin, and clothes, as well as hints of yellow that would naturally reflect onto the face. The more color I add, the easier the lineart becomes 🤗 For this particular drawing, I took a lot of liberties and didn't really try too hard to imitate the style 😅😅 I just wanted to have fun with it hahaha. But for the other pieces I've done in Horikoshi's style, I followed these same steps.
