@jerrythink: Kinda crazy that the two northernmost of the 6 major cities on the Mississippi are literally adjacent #minnesota #twincities #minneapolis #stpaul #geography
here's a fun fact, all radio stations west of the Mississippi River start with "K," and all those east with "W." So all Minneapolis radio stations start with K, and all St. Paul stations start with W

St. Paul is the western most “eastern” city and Minneapolis is the eastern most “western” city architecturally

Also, Minneapolis ended up being larger than St. Paul despite St. Paul being founded first and serving as the state capitol because it is much hillier and has more bluffs than Minneapolis, meaning building in Minneapolis was much easier. It gives St. Paul some incredible natural beauty though! Including a little-known slot canyon.

I remember going to the Mill City Museum on a field trip. They showed us where one guy fell about 100ft into a grain pit and suffocated. Not sure why they told a bunch of 8 year olds that but it was fun either way😂

Wild fact, the portage between Mississippi River and Red River systems is only a couple miles. Meaning the entire length of North America from Hudson Bay to the Caribbean was navigable by canoe

I grew up here and also heard that another difference was that St. Paul was more catholic and Minneapolis more Protestant. I still don’t know if that’s true or not. But my favorite thing about this place is that it’s an ecological transition zone where 3 of the main features that make up North America meet: the Eastern deciduous forests, the western prairies, and the Northern boreal forests that stretch all the way to Arctic. They all meet around here.

I’d like to know why other cities DIDNT claim the “Twin Cities” moniker - seems like Dallas/Fort Worth, San Francisco/Oakland, Tampa/St. Petersburg, or Miami/Ft. Lauderdale would be able to make similar claims.

I always heard it was because Paul Bunyan and his giant blue ox, Babe, had a falling out. Eventually they couldn’t stand the sight of each other, and had to be kept seven miles apart, on opposite sides of the river, to prevent total devastation.

Fun fact - the original Twin Cities name didn’t apply to Minneapolis and St Paul, it referred to Minneapolis and St Anthony, which was the other shore of the Mississippi across St Anthony Falls. At the time St Paul was far enough away by horse that it was considered completely separate. Minneapolis annexed St Anthony later and the name started being used for Minneapolis and St Paul as they grew together!

Makes sense why all of Minnesota’s major sports teams just use the state name rather than a city. They couldn’t choose between the two.

In the late 19th century The twin cities considered merging into 1 city. There was a street car system that connected them both and Como park and zoo was built as the "Central Park" of the twin cities. Minneapolis eventually rejected the idea, but one of the western most neighborhoods of St Paul is still referred to as the "midway" neighborhood
