The terse solution is basically never the correct solution in c++. Everything that should be terse (for instance, casting) isn’t, and everything that shouldn’t be (like error handling) is. The code given is considered bad practice cause no one knows the syntax you are using when you just define something.

not really switching though, most languages that support switching on strings will hash it and then have an equality check on the jump block for collisions
