Marriage Is Difficult, So Why Did the Prophet ﷺ Encourage It? Because it is effortless, but because its purpose outweighs its hardship. 1- A Shield for Purity. The Messenger ﷺ said: «يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمُ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ» “O young people, whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity.” 2- A Means of Strengthening One’s Faith. The Messenger ﷺ said: «مَنْ تَزَوَّجَ فَقَدِ اسْتَكْمَلَ نِصْفَ الإِيمَانِ، فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ فِي النِّصْفِ الْبَاقِي» “Whoever marries has completed half of his faith, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half.” 3- Marriage Is Part of the Prophetic Sunnah. When some of the Companions considered abandoning marriage in order to devote themselves entirely to worship, the Messenger ﷺ corrected them and said: «أَمَا وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَخْشَاكُمْ لِلَّهِ وَأَتْقَاكُمْ لَهُ، لَكِنِّي أَصُومُ وَأُفْطِرُ، وَأُصَلِّي وَأَرْقُدُ، وَأَتَزَوَّجُ النِّسَاءَ، فَمَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْ سُنَّتِي فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي» “By Allah, I fear Allah more than you and am more mindful of Him, yet I fast and break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me.” Marriage is therefore more than companionship. It is a means of protecting one’s chastity, following the Sunnah, developing patience and character, and building a righteous family.
