🚨Handling someone crying 👇 🧠 Many of us feel very uncomfortable when someone starts crying. This can make us want to find an immediate solution or move the conversation on in order to get rid of the discomfort. 💡Whilst it isn’t nice to see someone upset- crying is a normal way to display emotion so we must make sure we don’t invalidate it or dismiss it. It’s data that there is something deeper to explore. Avoid saying “there’s no need to cry” or “don’t cry”. It’s ok for someone and for us to cry. It’s normal. 🔥 As leaders if we avoid trying to understand the deeper reason for someone crying, not only do we lose out on a valuable opportunity to strengthen the relationship, we are also falling short on providing the support the situation calls for. 🚫 Not providing the support and avoiding exploring it further can lead to bigger problems for example underperformance, disengagement or sickness absence. 💡Going to get a tissue can be a great way to allow you a few minutes to think about how to respond supportively and gives a small space for their emotion to reduce in its intensity.
