Animal scientist here. You’d lose. It’s not that chimps are just stronger than an average human, it’s that they’re strong in *specific* and *important* ways. 1) The ~1.35x per-kilogram edge is concentrated in shoulders, arms, and hands. A 45–60 kg chimp has upper-body power comparable to a much larger human, and grip strength from arboreal locomotion that no human can match. Once it has hold of you, you will not get free. 2) we fight differently. We use tools to fight each other. Chimps don’t, and they have fighting tools built in that we don’t: Long canines, a heavy masseter and temporalis, and a bite that can remove fingers and facial tissue. Human attacks on each other are mostly blunt force; a chimp’s are mostly puncture and tear. 3) they fight dirty to do the most damage. In studies of chimp-chimp fights and documented human cases, chimps (which evolved to fight other troops vidciously)go for the hands, face and genitals; the same targets in intraspecific chimp violence. In a fight with a human, they’ll target out most sensitive areas that includes our only weapon (hands). They will rip them off with their large canines. 4) they have different arousal behavior and chimstry than we do. And agitated chimpanzee has none of the human hesitation we have when stimulated and they seemingly do not slow down when in pain. 5) they can withstand impact MUCH better than you. They have thick skin and dense bones. Further, they do not have a large brain like us. Oh wow that must make them vulnera—nope, they do not have the same concussive vulnerability that we, their large brained cousins with a big head on a long neck, are very susceptible to. That all being said I’d love to see a human fight one.
