In people with hypermobility, bowel symptoms don’t always start in the bowel. One overlooked contributor to slow motility and constipation is tethered cord syndrome — a condition where the spinal cord is abnormally restricted or under tension, which can affect the nerves involved in bowel, bladder, pelvic floor, and lower-extremity function. Sometimes the clues are subtle: chronic low-back pain, pain or pulling that radiates into the legs, difficulty fully emptying the bladder, constipation or trouble evacuating, and even noticing that symptoms feel better when someone pulls their knees toward their chest or curls into a fetal position. None of these findings alone proves tethered cord. But together, especially in someone who is hypermobile, they can be clues that the constipation is part of a larger neurologic process rather than simply a problem with the colon itself. Those little details matter. They can point toward something affecting bowel function, bladder function, pain, and mobility all at once. Sometimes with hypermobility, you don’t just have to think outside the box — you have to think outside the colon. #mcas #heds #dysautonomia #tetheredcord #hypermobility
