not to discredit you but literally last night a tracker was tied to my windshield wipers with human hair. I called the police and sure enough today they found out it was linked to a trafficking ring and the cameras of the parking lot saw the same men put it on my car, then wait 4 hours for me to come back, and as soon as I was around my car, putting something in my trunk, they stepped out of the car and started walking to me. I luckily had a weird feeling and got in my car and locked the doors then noticed the hair tied to my wipers. I didn’t even see the men. I drove to a different location and called police but your point is correct but that doesn’t mean the other situations can’t happen. We should always be alert and aware and careful, regardless of hoaxes or myths, the chance is never zero.

I think another big reason people want to think trafficking is random and set up like this is because a) they want to be the victim (omg I was almost trafficked!!) and b) subtle victim blaming we have as a society for the real way people are trafficked (omg how did you let your bf convince you to do cam work? I would never). It also makes it easier to ignore that the majority of trafficked victims are vulnerable due to poverty compounded with other factors like sexuality and race (more likely to be in dangerous situations and ignored by police)

I feel like people don't realize how harmful those stereotypes even are. I was trafficked as a child and the perpetrators weren't faceless, unknown, strangers who randomly snatched me up. Even if that is the case for SOME, typically there is still some aspect of family/personal relationship involvement. Whether that be neglect leading to the dangerous situation, not looking for the person, or being indirectly involved by knowing the perpetrator. I feel like sometimes people want a valid reason to feel like they're in danger when they aren't so they can relate to people who actually experienced danger.

People are too afraid to admit that the most likely perpetrator of any crime is somebody you already know. Somebody you're close to. Somebody you trust. Somebody who knows they can exploit you. Kidnapping, trafficking, assault, murder, stalking... While strangers do sometimes do those things it's almost always someone close to the victim. People want to have a figure to blame. They want a villain that they can project their desire for justice onto without having to think about how it effects those other than that villain. They want an easy answer, a perpetrator they can picture going to jail, getting a sentence. But life isn't easy, these things don't have easy solutions or easy answers, and these feelings are not easy things to work through. It doesn't mean that the people who do these things aren't wrong for it, in fact I'd say it makes it even worse. But real life is more complicated than bad people and good people. There's nuance to humans and the way people make out strangers to be the villains in these hypotheticals about violent crimes removes it from the conversation.

And the idea that we’re all equally at risk! Because if we’re all equally at risk, then there’s not much we can do, right? But in reality, there are demographics at much higher risk: kids in foster care, homeless ppl, undocumented ppl who can’t go to the police, etc.

you still gotta be careful. it could be for other crimes like robbery or rape. but probably not for human trafficking cause remember human trafficking is a business. they don't take random strangers. they take vulnerable people who they know have no family and friends. if you have a family that love you, you're already not a target.

I always wondered how ppl think of those ways to avoid it,when in the first place people would genuinely just grab you in a van with a bunch of people rather than just setting up a trap for you,unless its personal.its so sad how our world has truly come to than even people can betray you simply for their own selfish desire

less than 10 percent of victims were random. youre more likely to be trafficked by a spouse or friend than a random person. especially if yoh are in a position to be groomed to do so. People in poverty, people of color, people without support systems, etc. If they know you won't be a position to realize or stop them, then you are more likely to be a target. Sporadic choosings of targets leaves too much of a risk for organizations and established rings.

I feel the same way about teaching kids about “stranger-danger”! Yes children should be wary of strangers, but they are statistically more likely to be harmed by a step parent, family friend, aunt, uncle, or grandparent. Teaching children about “stranger-danger” is not sufficient enough protection

What angered me was the whole vinted situation because why in the fuck would they make it that obvious with the descriptions on the teddy bears? Human trafficking is not that obvious I could be wrong but why the hell would they one use vinted and two use very obvious descriptors it was definitely a sick joke made by multiple people rather than an actual case of human trafficking though again I could be wrong but surely human trafficking is not THAT obvious
