When I started composting almost a decade ago, I was completely overwhelmed. I overthought everything, and the information online was all over the place. It felt like composting had to be a perfect science and that one mistake would ruin the entire pile. Don’t get me wrong, composting is a science. It’s important to understand how compost breaks down so you don’t end up using fresh manure that can burn plants or expose yourself to harmful pathogens. That’s one of the reasons I choose to compost outside of my chickens living space with a long composting schedule. I combine periods of active composting with plenty of time for slow decomposition, giving the material time to fully break down into a rich, dark compost that’s safe for organic gardening. A healthy compost pile needs a balance of “greens” (nitrogen-rich materials like chicken manure, grass clippings, and vegetable scraps) and “browns” (carbon-rich materials like leaves, paper, and hemp bedding). Give it a stir occasionally, add moisture, air, and time, then nature does the rest. Things I throw into my compost: ✅ Chicken manure ✅ Hemp bedding ✅ Feathers ✅ Eggshells ✅ Garden trimmings & weeds ✅ Vegetable and fruit scraps ✅ Coffee grounds ✅ Fallen leaves ✅ Paper (make sure it doesn’t have glue!) Things I leave out: ❌ Meat ❌ Dairy ❌ Oils and fats ❌ Dog waste ❌ Chemically treated wood ❌ Diseased plants One of my favorite things about keeping chickens is that nothing goes to waste. Their manure becomes compost, the compost feeds the plants in my garden, and the garden grows food for our family. It’s pretty amazing when a pile of chicken poop turns into a bush full of blueberries. 🫐🐓 #chickenkeeping #chickenpoop #compostbin #DIYcompost #gardencompost
