Noho resident here, you’re absolutely right. Places like Northampton like to say that they’re on the cutting edge of progressive movements, but we often find ourselves just copying the centrist and republican ideas of capitalism solving all of our problems. Rent is high, unhoused numbers are even higher, and our town thinks the best choice is to remodel our Main Street. In reality, these blue cities are still nowhere near democratic socialism.

I worked with an 84 yr old woman at a wholesale store. She had retired normally at 62 and had to return to the workforce to afford basic needs. She struggled so much doing our daily tasks and I tried to help as much as I could but it broke my heart.

In 1988, 38 years ago, George Carlin said "it's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it." I'd say U.S. material conditions are much worst today than they were then, and that's just here. In 1988 a first time home buyer's average age was about 28, today it's 40. Homelessness is up, prices are up, wages are stagnant, there's different wars, different coups, why do we think it'll change when it never has except for the worse? the millennial "joke" has always been "what's a pension? what's retirement?" But it's realized already. People who should get to relax and take care of themselves after decades of labor are still laboring

I work with a 70yr old CNA at the nursing home I work at. she can't care for the patients properly and it causes a lot of issues. she still works at a job she can't physically do because she can't afford the rising cost of living and her hc needs.
