@safeinaustinrescue: It costs about $1 a minute to run Safe in Austin. Every minute. All day. All night. While there are 100 people here and while everyone is asleep. While kids are loving on animals and while someone is outside at 2am taking care of one who is sick. The minutes just keep happening, and somehow we have to keep paying for every single one of them. And since today is $5 Friday, I had a thought. What if you just bought five of them? Not a bag of feed. Not part of a vet bill. Not some tiny percentage of an enormous electric bill none of us particularly want to talk about. Just five minutes of Safe in Austin. Because in five minutes, someone is filling a water bucket or passing out medications. There’s hay being thrown, produce being chopped and approximately 900 loads of laundry that apparently reproduce when nobody is looking. And tomorrow, those minutes become something else too. Tomorrow is Saturday. This place will fill up with kids who will feed animals, clean stalls, sit with the chickens, write in notebooks, try something new, laugh really hard and almost certainly someone will get pooped on. There will be kids who have spent a lot of their lives being told that something about them is too much or too different standing beside animals who came here because something about them was too much or too different. And I will never, ever get tired of watching what happens next. There are 1,440 minutes in tomorrow. I want to fund all of them. Which sounds completely insane until you realize we don’t need one person to give $1,440. We need 288 people to give us five bucks. $5 buys 5 minutes. $10 buys 10. $30 buys half an hour. $60 buys an entire hour. And if you ever see a $5 Friday post and think, I only have five dollars. That’s not really going to help, I need you to know how much I disagree with that. I have watched some pretty life-changing things happen around here in five minutes. Five minutes of animals being safe. Five minutes of kids knowing they belong. Five minutes of this weird, beautiful, chaotic little place getting to keep doing what it does. You buy the minutes.
