@sapphael: Replying to @sam.cormac I just ate a handful pepperoni so I guess you can tell that I’m not a good medieval peasant. growing up I was never allowed to have meat on Fridays. whenever I would tell people it's a catholic thing I would get a "no it isn't???" from actual catholics so this makes me feel vindicated lol

The Orthodox Church still keeps that. We are vegans on Wednesdays and Fridays (some fish days), though shellfish is allowed. There is Lent, Nativity Fast, Apostles Fast and Dormition Fast, in all it adds up to almost half of the year.

the Catholic Friday fast, done by the huge wave of German Catholic immigrants in Wisconsin, led to Wisconsin's famous Friday Fish Fry! basically every restaurant in the state offers fried fish on Fridays, it's a big cultural thing

Can you clarify the word you said that was a substitute for 3pm? The subtitles said “noon,” but then you said “noon” right after and it sounded different. Is there a medieval word for 3 I don’t know?

Curious about where the information about Mon./Thurs. weekly Jewish fast days came from. I understand that medieval European Jewish practice could have been different but the only modern Jewish fast days I know (as an Ashkenaz Jewish person) are based on a yearly calendar (such as Yom Kippur & Tisha B'Av).

There’s a Lebanese play where a Christian and Muslim woman are talking about Ramadan and lent. The Christian woman mentions how hard fasting is because she has to abstain from doing the nasty. The Muslim woman turns to her husband and says “we must’ve been Christian all along!”

In Germany, a lot of university cafeterias, especially the older ones who used to be religious institutions, still only serve fish or vegan fare on Fridays. Also in Germany monks were great at finding ways to cheat lent. You’ve already mentioned the butter and lard thing but you should look up Herrgottsbescheißerle 😄

As far as I’m aware you are supposed not to eat meat on Fridays still - I’m pescatarian so I don’t anyway, but I went to Catholic schools and we’d always have fish on Fridays, and Fridays are a seafood day in my house as well

In Poland we also kinda had fast on Christmas Eve, which is the main Christmas event. I say kinda, because Christmas is all about stuffing yourself stupid, but no meat allowed. I guess some people ate only the Christmas dinner that day? It got officially cancelled some years ago but still a tradition
