I was on a jury for a DV case and during deliberation, we were 11-1 guilty except for one old guy who said “I don’t think he did it, we were outside smoking and he seems like a decent guy” we were enraged

In the UK, in a situation like this with a jury they can go to a majority. The only majority they can do is 10-2 or 11-1. The fact that this isn’t allowed in the US blows my mind, especially in cases like this. It’s still urged that they reach a unanimous decision, however to prevent a hung jury and a retrial the majority is allowed as an absolute last resort
