If you’ve followed Elon long enough, you know exactly the one I mean 😏 It looks suspiciously like a frown until you realize he’s usually trying desperately not to crack up! Elon has become so associated with the backwards smile that if you search the term, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find his face staring back at you Which makes the timing rather funny because Alex Gibney’s upcoming Musk documentary is already drawing backlash after a Hollywood Reporter preview quoted an anonymous source describing Elon as “the most miserable man” they’ve ever met and claiming he projects his unhappiness outward Maye Musk, Elon’s mom, pushed back on that portrayal, and Elon gave us something considerably more useful than an anonymous person diagnosing his emotional state, his own assessment: 50% happy, 40% neutral 10% sad Which honestly sounds remarkably human to me Elon has plenty to be happy about. He is blessed with many children that he adores, people who care about him, companies doing things that were considered impossible not very long ago, rockets flying into space, robots learning to work and an entire civilization to Mars problem keeping his brain occupied 🚀 Yet of course he gets sad too as there are things Elon has lived through that are genuinely heartbreaking, and anyone who has spent enough time learning his story knows there’s considerably more underneath the goofy memes and backwards smiles than most people ever see That doesn’t make someone “the most miserable man.” It makes them a relatable person Every real person has ups and downs. That’s simply part of being human, and I’ve actually found it rather refreshing that someone as extraordinarily successful and well known as Elon doesn’t pretend otherwise We see him laugh, joke and get ridiculously excited about rockets and technology. We also see moments when he’s tired, and teary-eyed. He doesn’t always put on a perfectly polished corporate mask and pretend everything is wonderful, and that humanity is part of what makes Elon relatable ♡ I also think there’s something strange about making a documentary that claims to explain the inner life of a living human being while relying on unnamed people to tell us how that human being supposedly feels. Especially when Elon himself has already told us how he feels Personally, I’ll take Elon’s word on the contents of Elon’s brain, and besides, I’ve studied the evidence.
