They have alternates that sit for the whole trial. They excuse the alternates after closing arguments and the 12 that go back for deliberations have to do the whole thing. If one gets sick on like day 2 of evidence, the alternate is substituted. Jurors are not told who is the alternate until just before deliberations.

The juror is fully capable of being the juror so they can’t replace him. Otherwise you could just replace jurors until you get the verdict you want

the reason they don't just swap out the juror is that they have to meet specific criteria to do so otherwise it would be considered jury tampering.

There are alternates, and they’ll swap out a juror if there’s just cause, that’s pretty much it. As for a retrial, it’s not so much about finding people who didn’t hear about it (which is almost impossible). It’s about finding people who are willing to listen to the evidence and form an unbiased opinion. That’s who they’re searching for, not necessarily someone who hasn’t heard or seen the case

The alternate jurors sit through the whole trial. They are there in case a juror has to be absent.
