Every teacher in our school used the same hall passes. Plastic. Bright orange. Easy to spot. Except one. A faded brass hall pass that no teacher admitted owning. Teachers had one rule. “If someone hands you the brass pass…” ”…don’t take it.” ⸻ One afternoon I asked to use the restroom. My teacher reached into her drawer. Then frowned. Instead of the orange pass… There was only the brass one. She stared at it. Like she’d never seen it before. Very slowly… She closed the drawer. “You know what?” “You can wait.” ⸻ During the next class… The fire alarm went off. Everyone rushed into the hallway. As we walked toward the exits… I noticed it. The brass hall pass. Lying in the middle of the floor. A boy I’d never seen before picked it up. “Someone dropped this.” The second he touched it… Every teacher stopped walking. They all turned toward him. At the exact same time. None of them blinked. One teacher quietly whispered… “Put it back.” ⸻ The boy laughed. “It’s just a hall pass.” He slipped it into his pocket.
