I’m finding that there is a prevalent inverse of this as well. Sometimes you encounter something that is objectively harmful to a specific demographic, but when someone from that demographic explains why the content is harmful then you get hoards of people shutting them down with “well this doesn’t apply to you then” and screaming “BEAN SOUP!!” No one ever has to examine their own biases or prejudice because whoever it harms ‘isn’t who they’re talking about.’ So we’ve got a mix of people who apply their highly specific individual experience to every benign thing, and people who can’t comprehend how individuals can be affected by the broader social impact of certain types of content/commentary. Then we put it all on social media (where nuance goes to die) and people lack the discernment to understand the difference.

it's so true and so frustrating. you can't have meaningful debates anymore. You can both be wrong and both be right. There is a spectrum of correctness and people don't get it. People are ruling their lives with feeling and not sense.

I also find people get offended when you ask them questions to better understand their POV. They get offended or feel attacked then accuse the other person of nefarious intent even when it’s a genuine bid for understanding. Sometimes I think it’s because they can’t actually defend or explain themselves and instead of admitting and challenging their ego, they shut down.
