@lexilafleurbrown: I am not a pretendian. Hopefully this addresses anyone’s concerns surrounding my Indigeneity. Canada has a dark and deplorable history and Indigenous peoples are still affected by the cultural genocide. #indigenous #nativetiktok #nativeamerican #anishinaabe #metis
I hate that the government of Canada expects me to choose between my First Nations side and my Métis side. I am both.

In Australia you’ll often hear ‘no matter how much milk you put in coffee, it’s still coffee’ when people bring up blood quantum

Reminder: blood quantum is a concept created by the GOVT. and even then, to me its about reconnecting. If you know your nation, tribe, etc and doing the work to know your roots, traditions, language and culture, you’re indigenous in my eyes. And I’m saying this as a full status Nehiyaw iskwew (cree woman) from treaty 6 who doesn’t know every damn thing about her culture, but I’m learning. I’m doing my best and refuse to be so shitty to deny someone their indignity bc they are more fair skinned than me.

In order to be “Métis” you have to have history of red river settlement etc etc. if you have a random indigenous person in your blood line from centuries ago, does not automatically make you Métis. This argument has stood the test of time and there is so much grey area.

There is second gen cut off tho. I wouldn’t get ur hopes up that you’ll get status until parliament gets rid of that law. Not saying ur not indigenous but if you do end up getting it please lmk how because I’ve been trying to get my kiddo status but they keep denying from second gen cut off.

Métis citizenship isn’t any less than First Nations status though. The way this is worded irks me as a Métis person that’s family has always been Métis going back to the battle of seven oaks. We also have residential school, incarceration, road allowance. All of those things. We can say we’re indigenous without diminishing eachother.

I think it's also important to recognize if you have white passing privilege and did not grow up with the culture. my great grandmother was Musqueam. I'm very white at the end of the day and did not grow up with the culture. I have a deep respect for indigenous cultures and advocate for indigenous communities as much as I can, as my way of connecting with my great grandmother.

I'm genuinely so confused about this, I have lots of family friends who are indigenous and some of them just got their status cards in their late 20s and even early 30s.. are we saying indigenous people harass other indigenous folks because they dont have their status cards?? you're still indigenous... I didn't have a passport until I was 26, I wasn't pretending to be Canadian 😳

My wife is a non status native. We have the genealogy and family history and people still tell her she isn’t. My family has been helping her reconnect with her culture as well. We support all indigenous around here

Métis originated from Manitoba. Just because you don’t have status does not make you Métis. If you are First Nation -Status or non-status as long as you can identify with a First Nation you are authentic. Thanks for verifying. It’s routine to ask what First Nation you originate from. Especially because of the pretendians and False Métis. There are many.
