@tranquilstreamsmusic: He wrote this in 1890, at twenty four, and nobody knew what to make of it. 🤍 They still don't, quite. He was playing piano in a Montmartre cabaret for money at the time, not writing anything a conservatory would've recognised. Paris in 1890 was busy being enormous. Wagner was the fashion. Music was supposed to build toward something. This doesn't build toward anything. It just sits there. In the years since, people have called it impressionist, minimalist, ambient, proto-jazz and film music, and not one of those labels stays on it for long. It arrived from nowhere and it never joined anything. That's most of why it still sounds current. Nothing dates it, because it was never part of a moment to begin with. Satie could be considered the Father of Ambience Music. There is no formal development plan and resolution, no second theme as in sonata format, no echo of the melodic line on the tonic key as in counterpoint. But the end result is aesthetic art nonetheless.
