@therenegadehome: Did you know late summer Monarchs are especially important? They’re known as the “super generation” and unlike their parents, these butterflies live up to eight months (as opposed to just a few weeks). They’ll migrate thousands of miles to their overwintering grounds in Mexico, ensuring the survival of the entire species next year, pretty wild! Sadly Monarch’s have had a critical decline in recent years. In the wild, fewer than 10% of monarch eggs actually make it to adulthood due to predators and harsh environmental conditions. BUT If you have milkweed growing in your yard, chances are you also have monarch caterpillars, and you can do this too. Setting up a simple home enclosure for them can help protect them when they’re most vulnerable and drastically increase their chances of survival. All you need is a mesh enclosure and a few milkweed plants or fresh milkweed clippings (if you buy from a nursery, make sure the plants are pesticide free). Keep the enclosure clean and the milkweed flowing and you’ll have happy Monarchs ready to be released in a few weeks.
