"Why doesn't God just deal with the evil now?" Jesus answers it with a plant. In the parable, a man sows good seed, and while everyone sleeps his enemy sows weeds, and both come up together (Matthew 13:24-30). The weed is darnel, and its story is terrifying. It's what botanists call a mimic: over thousands of years, every time farmers pulled the weeds that looked obviously wrong, they left the ones that looked most like wheat, and bred them, until we accidentally made a weed that is a flawless copy of the thing we were protecting. Young darnel and young wheat are, to the eye, identical. Its grain is poison. And that isn't just a plant fact, it's the Bible's whole picture of evil, which never comes as a monster but as wheat: the wolf in sheep's clothing (Matthew 7:15), Satan disguised as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), the beast with a lamb's horns and a dragon's voice (Revelation 13:11). So when the workers want to rip the weeds out, the owner says no, "lest you uproot the wheat with them" (13:29), because the roots are braided together underground, and because, as Jerome said, the delay leaves room for repentance, since the weed you'd tear out today might be wheat by tomorrow. And here's the turn: when the truest wheat that ever grew finally walked into the field, the professional discerners looked at Jesus and called HIM the weed, demonic, cast out by the prince of demons (Mark 3:22). That's how good the counterfeit is: it gets the real wheat torn out. Which is exactly why the sorting was never yours to do. He is the grain of wheat that fell into the ground and died (John 12:24) so there'd be a harvest at all. He's not waiting because he doesn't care. He's waiting because he will not lose the good to get at the bad. #wheatandtares #matthew13 #parables #darnel #whydoesGod
