I’ve never gotten over my mom taking my birthday presents from my grandparents back to the store and keeping the money. She ALWAYS had money for cigarettes and soda.

omg 4 months in the NICU those bills are expensive. my daughter was in the NICU for 6 wks and that hospital bill was $100k i can't imagine what it would be at 4 months. Op is definitely NTA and she needs to stop enabling her sister. She needs a wake up call.

Even if you gave them money. It’s not enough. Never was enough. And if you just give them the shoes? Absolutely you’ll be the worst person for not giving them cash. When I stopped giving money or ‘needed’ items, everyone disappeared and spoke badly about me to everyone they knew. That entire side of people disappeared. OP paid for plane tickets after she asked her sister for help and she said no. The money was spent bringing in family who were willing to help OP in a time of need. The sister not managing her money is not OP's problem.

Single mom here...that managed to stay single with an only child. Yes, I briefly had government assistance until I finished school. Then I worked in the medical field. I rarely needed help. If anything, I needed childcare and my sister or parents watched my child. But, I traded off with them. I'd watch my sister's 2 kiddos or make my parents dinner twice a week. It's about give & take. Doesn't sound like your sister is giving...only taking. You're NOT the asshole.
