Depuis quand la taille d’un continent est-elle un sujet de discussion ? La superficie de l’Afrique est une réalité scientifique. Cinq mètres sont plus grands que deux mètres : on ne vote pas pour décider de cela. Alors, si même une réalité aussi mesurable peut être déformée dans notre représentation du monde, que dire de l’Histoire ? Le vrai problème est psychologique : réduire visuellement l’Afrique, c’est aussi réduire sa place dans l’imaginaire collectif. Et si l’on peut déformer ce qui se mesure, on peut encore plus facilement déformer ce qui se raconte.
