Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, USA. He was the sixth child of John Marshall Clemens and Jane Lampton Clemens. When he was four, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where he spent much of his childhood. After his father’s death in 1847, Twain left school and began working as a printer’s apprentice. Later, he became a printer, typesetter, and riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. His experiences on the river inspired his famous pen name, “Mark Twain,” a term used by riverboat workers. Twain began gaining recognition as a writer after publishing humorous stories. His breakthrough came with “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in 1865. He later wrote some of his greatest novels, including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876) and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” (1884). Twain was famous for his humor, satire, and sharp criticism of society. He also traveled widely and became one of America’s most celebrated authors and speakers. In his later years, Twain faced financial difficulties and personal losses, including the deaths of his wife and three daughters. He died on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut, at the age of 74. He remains one of the most influential figures in American literature.
