I think Tony is in hell in the last scene because he walks into the diner and sees himself but he has a tired look on his face almost like he’s seen this countless times before. Also back in season 2 when Chris was shot he said that when he was in hell Mikey palmice told him that at the end of every day you experience how you die and that it’s painful.

The Finite Zone :

I felt 2001 was more a representation of man living his life. Looking ahead, he looks back to see himself, like he thought there was someone in the same room as him like a ghost, then looking forward from a distraction and seeing his ending. Only he doesn’t look over his shoulder this time and reaches forward to the unknown or the inexplicable thing he’s been chasing the entire life- the end and the beauty of wonder that can come with it.
