I think it's worth mentioning, that at least speaking for the Brazilian usage, when we call someone gringo is just a "name", we don't mean anything negative about it.

This is so interesting! I was in Honduras where my husband is from talking with my sister in law from Brazil. We spoke in Spanish bc she didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Portuguese and she referred to both of us as being gringas - now it makes sense!

in mexico gringo is anything from the us. either people, things. even “united states” is called “gringolandia” (gringo-land) so i’ve never used gringo for white people

In Mexico we use that word for Americans in general, no matter the race or the ethnicity. If you are from U.S, you are gringo.

if you’re not brazilian you’re a gringo, it’s pretty simple. sometimes even if you are brazilian but you’re too white or have some other ethnic background people might call you gringo as a nickname, just for the fun of it
