@632nm.podcast: Eric Betzig (Nobel Prize Chemistry 2014) pioneered super-resolution microscopy, allowing scientists to directly image biomolecules smaller than a wavelength of light. Using single-molecule resolution imaging has opened his eyes to how inaccurate, misleading, and unknown almost all of cellular and molecular biology is, stating that molecular biologists spin hypotheses about dynamics and biochemistry that have never actually been observed. He particularly dislikes the portrayal of kinesin proteins walking along microtubules, which vastly underestimate the complexity of the inside of cells. #biology #microscope #dna #scienceexperiments
Those animations were designed to show a specific process, so they didn’t put a trillion water molecules in the way.

What is this man talking about? Those are models. That’s like complaining that the globe is an accurate because it’s not showing all of the atmosphere.

pretty sure it's fuckin implied that there's cytoplasm in there. that's like saying "they show a plane but don't show the trillion air particles"

Those are animations to learn the concepts, it is like laughing that 2 parallel lines represent double covalent bonds between atoms. He is hallucinating out of context 😅😂

well, of course, stat mech - and the numbers - would help many appreciate the quantities and complexity involved

atoms are mostly empty space and they make up cells. the models you are referring to are simplified for educational matters.

they’re models to demonstrate very specific functions and they do that well, since you would t be able to see anything otherwise. But he’s correct we should preface this with the correct perception much like we preface images from Hubble, Webb, etc showing invisible wavelengths

It’s really sad when people don’t know the difference between something that’s designed to teach someone something and how it might actually appear. If I wanted to show you how pistons work in an engine, I’d show you an animation of the pistons. I wouldn’t show them behind the rest of the engine block and plates, hood, etc. even though that’s how a car looks in real life.
