How to make your scenes more cinematic: 1. Story; This should be your first rule. Always have a story. Even if it's just one frame, make it count. Try to tell the viewers what you feel through visuals. Even a cliffhanger where they want to know what is going to happen and they create their own ending in their head is perfect. What is the story with your clip? 2. Composition; Short and simple: Composition refers to the way elements of a scene are arranged in a camera frame. It's how focus is drawn to the subject. Help the audience perceive a three-dimensional world when they're looking at a two-dimensional screen. Study this part and you will stand out from the crowd very quickly. Scene (wide, medium, close) Know that making a scene with what your subject is doing is huge to make your scene. Staying in the same area with the same colors and lighting really holds suspense. 3. Lighting Direction, quality and colour of the light. These are the main pillars when it comes to lighting and how to use it in a scene without light, there is no mood it. Without mood, there is no feeling - and this is what you always wanna aim for - feelings. Backlight info helps immensely. Everything else looks rather "video-ish" 5. Never zoom This is a red flag unless you really wanna achieve a specific look/feel for the scene and it adds something needed. Zooming is not cinematic though and should never be done. Read up on "Dolly shots" and you will find that this is the technique used in big movie productions. 6. Grading This is a big one and one of my most favourite parts. Grading is when the desired look and mood gets really finessed. It is where the story really comes to life. It's a huge topic and I will cover this more in the future. For now, learn all about it. 7. Music Of course music is the cherry on the cake. Hunt for nice scores that really underline the story of your scene. Always remember; audio gets processed first in your brain - visuals after. 8.
