@vocaldecoding: Singers, if you’re performing for your audience, you’re cheating them—and you’re putting yourself above them. Performing is for you first. It’s for you to have your experience. By having your own experience onstage, you open the door for the audience to have theirs. Each audience member now has permission to have their own unique experience. So your job as a performer is to have a great time up there—experiencing yourself in a brand-new way, experiencing the song in a brand-new way, and experiencing the entire event in a brand-new way. When you do that, that childlike sense of awe becomes contagious. Energetically, it opens the door for the audience to experience awe and wonder as well—and to have their own unique experience, which may have nothing to do with yours at all. Your job is not to tell the audience what to feel. Your job is to feel for yourself, which allows the audience to feel whatever they want to feel, need to feel, or came to feel. Everybody comes to a show for an experience. On the surface, we come to hear a great singer or great songs. But go a few layers deeper, and nobody really cares about that. They care about the experience that hearing the great singer or the great songs allows them to have. That’s what you do as a performer.
