@mindspark_hq: People don’t quit jobs. They quit bosses. Recognition is free. Nothing wrong with recognition to retain happy employees. Every person between 17 and 30 yrs of age should see this clip.
We are creating a generation that confuses recognition with constant validation.
Your boss does NOT need to say “thank you” every time you complete a task that is part of your job.
You want recognition?
A raise is recognition.
A promotion is recognition.
More trust is recognition.
More opportunities are recognition.
Being given a seat at the table is recognition.
But expecting applause, praise, “please,” and “thank you” for every normal responsibility?
That’s not recognition. That’s validation.
Here’s something we seem to be forgetting:
You are not doing your company a favor by showing up and doing the job you were hired to do.
And your company is not doing you a favor by employing you.
It’s a professional agreement:
You bring your skills, time, effort, and results.
The company pays you for them.
Of course, good leaders should show appreciation. Respect should always go both ways. A healthy workplace should recognize exceptional effort.
But there’s a difference between being respected and needing to be constantly thanked for doing your job.
If you need constant validation just to perform your basic responsibilities, maybe the position isn’t the right fit.
And if you consistently deliver exceptional work and the company never recognizes your value?
Then stop begging for recognition.
Find a place that will.
