The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a resolution promoting maps that represent countries and continents more accurately by area. For centuries, the widely used Mercator projection has made regions near the poles appear much larger while making Africa look smaller than it really is. Togo led the push at the UN, with 164 countries voting in favour, six abstaining and only the United States voting against.
