My hot take is "mean" is subjective. Lots of students think rigor is mean.

It’s a hot take but should be a cold one cause what do you mean if the prof has a bad day, now it’s my problem

Ugh so true. If you’re having a bad day, none of your students or trainees should know that based on your behavior!!!

My hot take is that when sometimes when students complain about mean professors what they're actually responding to is a demand for rigor, and challenges to their current mind state. as someone who probably felt this way and when I was an underwear at times, it wasn't until I was older and able to reflect fully appreciate these things. this is why we shouldn't ask students to evaluate faculty for quality (at least not as a way of establishing job performance).

I’ll add, regulating your emotions is a part of ANY job, hard stop

From what i see online, professors have to deal with increasingly emotional students, having outbursts in the middle of class/ running influencer pranks/ generally being distracting. So i will be cutting the professors some slack with that in mind.

My hot take is in that environment women professors are considered “mean” and “don’t know how to regulate emotions” but men are just “strong” 🙄

Are there actually mean profs? Yes. Are there also students who think professors who hold them accountable and don't give them special treatment are "mean"? Absolutely.

Academia allows truly toxic and completely unprofessional behavior to flourish and it’s even worse at the most prestigious universities.. I’ve told my friends outside of academia some stories and they were shocked because those behaviors would immediately get someone fired in the corporate world

My hot take is you should be trained in pedagogy and andragogy before teaching undergrads and grads—how do you fair?

15 minutes before my class began I was notified of a former student’s passing. I did not have time to regulate. In the middle of lecture, I broke down. Canceled class. We’re still human.

so true!! I am all for being a bit distracted or "out of" your normal energy but take your anger/frustration out of human beings who's education you are responsible for is disgusting, immature and inappropriate.

Especially if you’re teaching something related to the mental health field, it just seems backwards.

so tragic that human beings - especially Psychologist (above all) act like that and bully others. academia is an insane place. I have had some very scary professors.

I was a non-traditional student in undergrad after serving in the military for 16 years. The difficult professors were talk to by me privately about their behavior. If it wasn’t corrected, I went to the chair of their department. Not all students are 18-22 year olds they can bully.

To be honest, it's the job any normal human being to regulate their own emotions.

My hot take (as a music Ed professor and former K-12 teacher) is that all professors should have to take the kinds of pedagogy focused coursework and teacher training that education majors take.

What about the difference between being “mean” vs holding boundaries? I used to be a pushover and let students turn in stuff late, etc but I’m getting more “mean” with sticking to university policy and implementing stricter policies in my syllabus but feel mean when I do enforce them

Couldn’t agree more! I have been doing a lot of regulating and reflecting on school in my last. I had a guitar teacher who would yell at the back talkers in class. I never understood that kind of aggression introduced into that kind of environment with minors.

I think there’s more to it though. We all have bad days- days where we are less patient, maybe a bit snippy- and on those days I usually say “hey yall, I am having a rough day as Bailey the person- and I don’t want that to impact Bailey your professor- but if you notice me acting short, my apologies, it’s not you it’s me😂”

Should I apply for grants before I apply to a Ph.D. program, or would a grant already be attached to the program to make it free if I get accepted?
