#oromotiktok #foryoupage ARSI ONE OF THE HEARTS THAT FEEDS ETHIOPIA Arsi means a lot to Ethiopia. Many people know it for farming and for producing grain. But its contribution goes far beyond that. Arsi supports families and communities through agriculture, livestock, trade, jobs, tourism, nature, culture and sport. 🌾 AGRICULTURE & FOOD SECURITY According to Ethiopia’s 2020/21 agricultural survey, Arsi and West Arsi together produced about 28.98 million quintals of grain. That is nearly 2.9 million metric tons. This included approximately: 🌾 Wheat — 11.38 million quintals 🌽 Maize — 6.19 million quintals 🌾 Barley — 5.26 million quintals 🌱 Teff — 2.04 million quintals The area also produces sorghum, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and many other crops. Arsi and West Arsi also accounted for about 17.45% of Ethiopia’s wheat-growing land and 17.93% of the country’s barley-growing land in 2020/21. Arsi Zone alone has been reported to produce around 13% of Ethiopia’s barley output. These numbers show why Arsi is so important to Ethiopia’s food supply. The work of farmers in the area reaches homes and markets across the country. 🐄 LIVESTOCK Arsi is also a strong crop and livestock farming region. Families raise cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and other animals. Livestock provides milk, meat, eggs, hides, manure, farm power and income. For many families, animals are not only a source of food. They are also a form of security and a way to support the household. Arsi is also blessed with beautiful landscapes and natural resources. The Arsi Mountains, forests, wildlife and highland scenery offer great opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and cultural tourism. The Dhera-Dilfekar section of Arsi Mountains National Park has wildlife, birds, beautiful views and cultural and historical sites. It has strong potential for ecotourism and could attract more visitors with better support and promotion. West Arsi is also home to places such as Lephis Ecotourism Village. The area is known for forests, waterfalls, wildlife, birdwatching, hiking, horse riding and handicrafts. Visitors can also experience Arsi Oromo culture and traditions including the Gadaa system and the Atete festival. 🏃🏾‍♂️ SPORT & NATIONAL PRIDE We also cannot talk about Arsi without remembering its great sporting tradition. The highlands of Arsi have produced generations of talented Ethiopian distance runners.
