If I were the client, I’d probably forget that answer after the interview. Here’s how I’d answer it instead. “Hi! I previously worked as a Customer Service Representative, where I handled customer concerns, managed multiple conversations at the same time, and made sure every issue was resolved professionally. Those experiences helped me build communication, organization, and problem-solving skills that I believe are also valuable in a Virtual Assistant role. Recently, I’ve been preparing to transition into VA work by building portfolio projects, practicing real client tasks, and learning AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to improve my productivity. While I don’t have direct VA experience yet, I’ve been making sure I have the skills and hands-on practice to contribute from day one.” Instead of saying I’m a fast learner, I’m showing the client how my previous experience connects to the role and what I’ve been doing to prepare. That’s what transferable skills look like. If I were preparing for interviews today, here’s what I’d do.
